Working on my blog

Hello everyone,

Welcome to my novice blog. The purpose of my blog is to continue searching more deeply into my family roots. I enjoy history and especially love hearing and sharing stories about family and friends. These stories give me a connection to my life and help to preserve cherished memories for future generations.

Also, I hope to find more information and correlation to certain genetic traits that could help in making people more aware of the many illnesses we possess through our DNA, and to be become more assertive and proactive regarding our health choices.

Presently, I am reviewing several formats for developing my family tree, and would love to hear from people about good and bad sites. Some are free, and others are rather costly. Looking forward to hearing from you.

  2. I'll be watching for your results. I started to try it about 20 years ago but didn't find anything useful - I had no internet access at the time. Now my oldest daughter is showing interest in it so I'll point her toyour blog as well.

  3. Wish you a lot of luck and have fun with it. My daughter had to do a family tree when she was in 3rd grade and I was able to provide all the details on her dad's side from listening to the stories that the family would share. I traced her paternal grandmother's father who was born in Spain and moved to Mexico during his teenage years. Gave her a little piece of info that her dad did not know.

  4. Can't wait to see the results. I would love to research my family line, but as I am sure you are finding out it takes a lot of time. Maybe someday I will start it.

  5. How is it going? Are you assigning geneology as a project to any of your students?

  8. Thanks for all the feedback. As some of you have mentioned this is a very time consuming project and I need to decide on a specific format to use for all my collected information.

  10. I can't offer any specific advice about Web sites except I have noticed there are quite a few and they almost all seem expensive for what you get. I have a cousin that has compiled an extensive history of our mutual family histories and individual histories. He seems to spend a great deal of time search public records. Lately he has come up with interesting and entertaining newspaper articles. You can see one about an uncle of ours injured in the Korean War on my site.

  11. Thanks for the feedback Pat, I can appreciate everything that you are saying that your cousin has compiled. Much of my information on my fathers family has been from my compiling information that I have been gathering over the last few years. On the other hand, I am struggling with my mothers lineage and I have been attempting to search public records too. I have added a new site this week called "Cyndi's Genealogy" that is very well put together, and it has tons of assessible links. Unfortunately, some will have fees. I can foresee the need to pay a fee when I really feel that I have reached a deadend, or if I can fill in a missing link it will be worth the price to continue my search.

  12. For anyone that is looking for a place to work on your family tree I looked at both Geni.com and Tribalpages.com which have both been recommended. Both start out free but the Tribal Pages seems to be a much larger and more capable site. I also lost several entries while trying to put in a test on the Geni site. Needless to say I'm going with the Tribal Pages.
